Relationships, Health and Sex Education Curriculum

3rd July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

‘Preparing for Adulthood’ is the key aim of our curriculum:

  • Employment
  • Friends, Relationships & Community
  • Independent Living
  • Good Health

As a part of your child’s educational experience at Stormont House School, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal & Social Development (PSD) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.

From September 2020 the Department for Education is making Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) compulsory in all secondary schools. Most of this is already covered in our school curriculum, but we welcome having a clear and consistent framework.  Along with other schools we are preparing to introduce these compulsory changes when we begin the new school year.

Getting your perspective

Early next week we will send a survey link to your mobile phone so you can tell us where your child already feels secure in this area and where they need teaching/ reinforcement. It should only take a few minutes to complete but will be very valuable. Please see below for more information and how to ask any questions that you have.

What does the new guidance mean?

The new guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships.

Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, it will give our young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and will help them take responsibility for their own well-being.

All of the sessions will be age-appropriate and meet the needs of all students in the class.

How will this be delivered?

This guidance will form part of our school’s PSD programme which is taught throughout the school in every year group and is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and governing body.

More details about our PSD curriculum offer is posted on our school’s website, along with a list of our range of recommended resources:

All teaching in PSD will take place in a safe learning environment and be underpinned by our school ethos and values. A variety of opportunities will be provided for students to ask questions to further their understanding and to find out more about what affects them personally.

 What if I have questions?

We would like to ensure everyone is informed and has the chance to ask questions about what your child will learn. You may also be interested to view the materials and resources we are planning to use in lessons and consider how you can best support your child to discuss these topics at home.

As a school community, we are committed to working closely with parents. Recent feedback from several parents has indicated the overwhelming support of the Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) programme. I plan to hold weekly surgeries once a week after school once the ‘lockdown’ is lifted so that you can meet with me or view the resources. If you have questions or would like to find out more please contact Angela McKell, PSD Lead: angela.mckell@stormonthouse.hackney.sch.uk

 In the meantime,

As mentioned above, we would like to have some initial feedback from every family so please keep an eye out for a link to the electronic survey!

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me directly - I promise to come back to you with 24 hours.

Yours sincerely,

Angela McKell
