Year 12 Duke of Edinburgh - Qualifying Expedition
12th May 2017
Following a successful practice expedition in September, Year 12 students were ready to take on their Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expedition. The student’s expedition included an overnight camp, cooking their own food and a lot of walking!
The students had to plan, train and complete the expedition through their own physical effort and with minimal intervention from adults. Their qualifier started at a Bikers café in the middle of Epping Forest where they split into two teams. From this point they had to use their orienteering skills to navigate their way to Gilwell Park Scout Camp using a map and compass, all the while carrying their rucksacks with equipment for the overnight stay. Both teams did very well navigating their way to camp and both teams finished the first days walk in record time, beating times set by previous Stormont House sixth form students. The Year 12s spent one night camping in Gilwell Park where they had to put up their own tents, then cook their evening meal and breakfast the following day. The students braved a freezing night with temperatures dropping below -3 °. On Thursday morning they packed up camp and make their way to the Chinese Circus on Bury Road, Chingford, which marked the end of their qualifying expedition. Once both teams finished the Assessors from H5 told all the students that they had
passed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition. Well done Year 12!
