Mencap National Athletics Championships

8th July 2016

Very early (5am) on Saturday 25 June Mr Hajdrych, Mr Ramphul  and Ms Danskin set off with Shaquille, Jamie, Warren, Kevin, Aaron B, Victoria, Tekia and Malachi to travel to Barnsley. The students had been selected to take part in the ‘Open National Athletics Championships’ which took place at the Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre in Cudworth,Barnsley.

After a slightly problematic start when their  train was cancelled, the team managed to get on a replacement train which got them to the stadium with minutes to spare. All of the students performed very well and were fantastic ambassadors for Stormont House School.

Due to our involvement in national competitions many of our students are known for their sporting prowess by the other teams that took part in the championships, this competition was a chance for them to meet up with atheletes from all over the country who they have previously competed against. The students took part in a number of events which included both track and field events. Everyone who attended performed to the best of their ability and personal bests were achieved by several students. Shaquille (Year 12) achieved an amazing personal best in the 400m event - he recorded a time of 55 seconds to finish in first place.

Our students achieved the following results:

Shaquiile: 400m, 100m and 200m  - Gold

Aaron B: 200m and Javelin – Silver, 100m – Bronze

Victoria: 100m and 200m – Gold

Tekia: 100m and 200m – Gold, Long Jump-Silver

Mr Hajdrych would like to congratulate every member of the team, he is looking forward to next year’s competition in the hope that our students can perform to the same high standard. Well Done to all of the students who competed at the National Athletics Championships, you are wonderful ambassadors for Stormont House School.
