English

Students work towards developing and building upon the skills learnt when completing either the Step Up to GCSE Entry Level Certificate or GCSE English qualification. Students also work towards accreditation in Functional Skills English at one of the following levels: Entry level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2. Some pupils have already achieved a Functional Skills English qualification or Entry Level Certificate, so will work towards gaining the next level.

English lessons cover the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are encouraged to read and analyse non-fiction texts such as letters, articles, emails and leaflets, and literary texts from a range of authors. They also write their own non fiction and fiction texts. Lesson starters encourage the sharing of knowledge and help develop English vocabulary and skills. Students are assessed through teacher observation, peer and self-assessment, presentations, tests in their exercise books or through the use of ICT.
