Emergency access to dental care during COVID-19

22nd April 2020

Good afternoon Oral Health Champions,

We hope you are all keeping safe and well in this difficult time.

We just wanted to send a few reminders about oral health and let you know how you can access dental care at the moment because general dental practices are not offering any routine dental treatment throughout the United Kingdom due to COVID 19.

Therefore for emergency cases only the below process should be followed:

1. In the first instance, contact your own dentist by telephone for advice

2. If you don't have a dentist or if you are unable to contact your own dentist, call NHS 111

3. You should then receive advice over the phone (which may include a prescription if appropriate) this telephone consultation is free

4. In some cases following the telephone consultation you may be directed to an Urgent Dental Care Centre for emergency treatment, here NHS charges may apply for any treatment undertaken.

Please see link below for further information.

Alongside this, please remember to prioritise your prevention to reduce the chance of you needing emergency dental care during this time.

Remember to...brush your teeth twice a day, for at least 2 minutes, with a fluoride toothpaste, spitting out your toothpaste but not rinsing your mouth out afterwards.

Also... limit the amount and frequency of sugar in your diet. Try to keep any sugar to meal times only and ensure everything that you eat in-between meals is a 'safe snack' i.e does not contain sugar, for example fresh whole fruits and vegetables, cheese, milk and water.

For adults or children over 12 encourage daily interdental cleaning with floss or Tepe brushes.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon when this is all over.

Stay safe. Stay home. Protect the NHS

Best Wishes
