An Orchestra Experience for Year 8

19th July 2019

Throughout May, June and July this term, students in Year 8 have been involved in an exciting project with the Apollo Orchestra. Members of each section Brass, Woodwind, Strings as well as the Conductor David Chernaik visited Stormont House School to open up the world of the orchestra to our students. We had an introduction with each musician telling the students about their instruments and how they worked. Each ensemble played an exciting variety of pieces from Mozart and Ravel to the sound tracks from Star Trek and Harry Potter. David Chernaik gave us a master class on how to conduct a symphony orchestra. The project culminated by an invitation to an explosive and magical concert of Stravinsky’s Firebird at the Hackney Empire. During the instrumental sessions, every student was fully involved. The members of the orchestra once again said that our students were most attentive and asked and answered quite difficult questions. Miss Cross was very impressed with the students’ exemplary behaviour and with the way they engaged so well with every session.
